A Field Trip to San Francisco

Last weekend, Jamie and I were invited to a baseball game in San Francisco. The SF Giants were playing an exhibition game against the Oakland A's before the official home opener on Tuesday, and we thought this would be a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Our friends Doug and Judy invited us to go, and they had to drop off their daughter at Berkeley along the way, so we decided to actually park in Berkeley and take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport) into the city. Riding the train was an experience in itself since it actually dips below the bay to get you from Oakland into SF.

We got to the ball park with no problem, and Jamie and I were extremely excited to see what type of food or object would be racing (my favorite is still the Pierogi races at PNC Park in Pittsburgh--mostly because they have cool names, like Oscar the Onion Pierogi). It turned out that they raced Cable Cars (go figure), but nobody seemed overly interested since they didn't have people dressed up in obnoxiously large cable car suits running around on the field.

After the game ended, Doug wanted to show us the parts of the city we've never seen before. So we walked along the streets of Fisherman's Wharf, we rode the Cable Cars for the first time, and we even got kicked out of the Carnelian Room, which is a high-class restaurant/lounge that sits on the 52nd floor of a large building and provides breathtaking panoramic views of the city. Apparently, the lounge has a dress code that doesn't include the type of attire you would wear to a baseball game. As the manager quietly asked us to leave, we heard a couple at a nearby table say, "thank-you" to the manager. Afterward, we went to a restaurant in China Town for dinner. By the end of dinner, it was 9 o'clock, and we were all exhausted from running around the city all day. So we made our way back to the BART station, sped underneath the bay to get back to Berkeley, drove back home, and promptly went to sleep to dream of cable cars and tasty Chinese food!
